Lions & Council of Churches Sponsor “Chili Supper” for the Food Pantry –

The February 4th “Chili Supper” was a smashing success! Thanks to the community support, this supper raised $1,100 for the Food Pantry.  Thanks to the CAVS and Academies for supplying the high school students that served at the Supper.

2011 “Citizen of the Year” and “Organization of the Year” –

The Culver Lions selected John Elliott of Culver as their 2011 Citizen of the Year.  He has been one of those individuals who constantly look for ways to help others. He has assisted untold numbers of people and families during his 40 years in the Culver area…..A dedicated member of Grace UCC.  He was a major factor in the recent rehab and enlargement of the Culver Food Pantry.  The Lions tip their hats to…. John Elliott! (See “Photos” Link)

The Culver Lions selected the Community Garden group as their 2011 Organization of the Year.  This organization has been operating a community garden for two years and providing fresh produce for the Culver Food Pantry.  In addition, they sell their produce at the Culver Farmer’s Market….with all proceeds going to support the Culver Food Pantry.  Wesley UMC provides the land for planting.  Grace UCC members imitated the idea and have provided most of the labor in maintaining the Garden.  The four key members of this group: Barb Quivey, Corey Barnes, Connie Richie and Edna Mae Craft accepted the award on behalf of the Community Garden Group.

The Lions tip their hats to this outstanding and industrious group of “Doers for Others”!

Thanksgiving Poem

by Lion Vickie Dearth

Thanksgiving is a word

that once a year is often heard.

Starts when we’re little, thinking small,

give thanks for food and your new ball.

We really don’t quite grasp the meaning

just that towards gratitude you’re leaning.

As we grow, the meaning clears –

. . . for pie and punkins, turkey ears - - no wait,

that’s corn and bread and stuff.

We eat way more than just enough,

but then they say “But Wait!  There’s more:

                        People to be grateful for:

Our Veterans – former and “du-jour”

Our present soldiers, rich and poor

Our ancestors and those who live

(who, Christmas gifts quite soon will give.)

So, we give thanks and serve and serve –

We know we’ve more than we deserve –

. . . we’re warm, well-fed, and pretty happy,

on to Thanksgiving – make it snappy.

Appreciate what all you’ve got

. . . remember to help those who have not

And while we’re listing things we “lub

. . . let’s not forget our Lions Club!!
